Member benefits
We are committed to providing outstanding value for money to our member trusts.
In addition to our influencing work to shape the policy environment in which they operate, and our high profile media work on trusts’ behalf, membership of NHS Providers gives access to, what we are told is, a highly valued range of networks, conferences, roundtables, development programmes, newsletters, briefings, publications and blogs.
Our offer is highly valued by our members and our latest member research highlighted that:
96%
of chief executives were satisfied or very satisfied with our work.
96%
of chairs and chief executives said they use our policy reports and briefings.
94%
of respondents said it is very or fairly important for their organisation to be a member.
We offer four types of membership; in addition to our provider members, systems can join us through our ICB associate membership, commercial companies can become members through our commercial partnerships (open to various health sector organisations who can bring new ideas, innovation and efficiencies to our members) and other limited healthcare bodies can join as associate members.
Our influence and voice
One of our most valued member benefits is the influencing and policy development work we do on behalf of our provider members. We focus on promoting and protecting our members’ interests, which has never been more vital than during this current backdrop of significant change to the NHS and the extremely challenging financial context.
Our understanding of policymaking and the political context ensures we are able to successfully work closely with government, parliamentarians and industry regulators to ensure the voice of NHS providers is heard at the highest levels, and in partnership with our members we develop policy solutions grounded in practise.
NHS Providers is a politically neutral organisation. We work with parties from across the political spectrum and attend the main party conferences to discuss key policy issues with party members and leaders.
We engage with parliamentary select committees, topical parliamentary debates and announcements. Our engagement includes submitting written and oral evidence on a range of issues to select committees, public bill committees and all-party parliamentary groups.
We provide parliamentarians with data and analysis for use in parliamentary debates and for the drafting of oral and written parliamentary questions.
We also meet regularly with ministers, their advisers, officials and members of the opposition shadow health team to put the case for our members on a broad range of issues and to influence policy development and manifesto plans.
Our influencing priorities
Our commitment to race equality and inclusive leadership across the NHS underpins and informs our work across each area. Our five main influencing priorities are:
- Play a leading role in the conversation on reform, improvement and transformation of the health service, centred around patient needs.
- Advocate for investment in robust workforce planning and development as essential to providing safe, high-quality care.
- Make the case for better access to capital funding, the revenue funding needed to enhance productivity, and the importance of sustained whole system investment.
- Provide the frontline view on ongoing operational pressures, care backlogs and the impact of health inequalities.
- Help shape the landscape to enable trusts in systems and their partners to work collaboratively and deliver joined-up care for the communities they serve.
Parliamentary debates and legislation
Health and care is regularly debated in parliament. MPs and peers raise local and national issues and explore both broad policy issues and specific health and care needs.
We actively influence legislation relating to health and social care during its passage through both houses, and through our comprehensive briefings we are able to influence the final provisions in an Act, persuading parliamentarians and government of the merits of proposed amendments and securing changes that reflect the interests of trusts and foundation trusts.
Select committees
Select committees examine government spending, policies and administration, and develop parliamentary debate. They hold a number of inquiries each year, and we submit evidence to help inform these.
All-party parliamentary groups
All-party parliamentary groups (APPGs) are informal cross-party groups that cover a wide range of issues. We regularly submit written evidence to relevant inquiries and give oral evidence to highlight issues facing our members and the wider health and care sector.
Our support offer
At a time of unprecedented pressure on NHS leaders, our development programmes, conferences and networks offer an opportunity to step back, reflect, learn and gather support from peers.
Our offer is delivered both virtually and in person. It includes conferences, webinars, peer learning forums and whole board and senior leadership development sessions, alongside a range of peer learning resources from how-to guides and case study briefings to blogs, videos and podcasts to enable continuous learning.
We continually develop our support offer, ensuring we respond to evolving member needs.
Development programmes
Each of our programmes is designed to help NHS leaders step back, learn from current practice both within the sector and beyond, and take away practical insights.
Our offer includes a wide range of practical support, peer learning and activities focused on the priority topics for board members and increasingly for aspirant board members.
A number of our offers can be delivered directly as in-house training for support built specifically around an organisation’s training requirements. We can also deliver bespoke development programmes tailored to support the strategic objectives and development needs of individual boards and senior leadership teams.
Some of our programmes are included in the membership fee while others are paid for as an addition, at a discounted rate for members.
Networks
We offer 12 member only networks supporting all NHS board level roles.
Each network meets several times a year and provides a great opportunity for members to keep up to date with the latest developments in health policy, exchange ideas with peers and hear from key external experts and system leaders in a safe, reflective environment.
These networks are free to attend as a core part of our offer for provider boards, and we reserve the safe space offered for members only to connect with peers and keep up to date with changes in the sector.
Conferences and roundtables
Each year, we host a number of market-leading conferences including our flagship Annual Conference and Exhibition which brings together trust chairs and chief executives and other senior leaders in the NHS.
Our members only In conversation with... roundtables and in person dinners give individuals an opportunity to engage with the most senior leaders in the NHS and beyond.
Our offer of policy roundtables gives members the opportunity to speak directly to key stakeholders on hot topics impacting the health and care sector.
