Course overview
NHS Providers in partnership with NHS England delivers an essential induction programme specifically designed for new non-executive directors (NEDs) of NHS trusts and foundation trusts.
This is specifically for new NEDs who are less than 6-9 months in post.
This two day induction aims to prepare new NEDs for their roles in the sector. It has been developed to provide a deeper understanding of their board role as part of a unitary board along with an essential overview of the current NHS environment in which the role is set. The aim is to ensure all NEDs gain a core understanding of the fundamentals of their role and the NHS context.
Please note this is a two day event and delegates are expected to attend both days. This induction is being delivered virtually via zoom.

I attended this programme myself as a new NED just over two years ago and cannot commend it highly enough. Has formed a key part for me in how I conduct the role and I urge any new NEDs to take part.

- An up-to-date overview of the NHS policy landscape
- NHS governance and the responsibilities of NEDs The board’s role in managing risk
- A policy overview of NHS finances and funding
- An introduction to oversight and support from NHS England
- The role of CQC in regulation
- The board's role in race equality
- Developing your impact as a newly appointed non-executive director
- The opportunity for you to meet and network with peers from other organisations
Course format:
This two day course is delivered virtually via zoom, delegates are expected to attend both days of the induction. Estimated timings are:
Day one: 9.15am - 4.30pm
Day two: 9.15am – 4.00pm
